between then & nowSoo, a lot has happened since the last time I updated. I haven't been taking pictures that often, either. My camera has been collecting dust for the most part... but anyway. So, I switched barns. I've been mulling over this for a while, but about three weeks ago, we finally acted upon it. I just wasn't getting anywhere. I want to do H/J, but I'm at a barn is turning into solely dressage and I'm being taught by a very dressage-y person. Which is fine, but we haven't made any progress in the past year. It was extremely difficult to break the news to my trainer of four years. She confided that she thought we would be the ones to stay in the long run. God, it was awful. But we're out of there... at a more serious show barn. And so far, things haven't been all that smooth...
So, I do my evaluation ride with my new trainer & he pretty much says that I'm sitting completely wrong & Airborn needs a lot of work, too. Then, we're working on canter-walk-halt transitions and Airborn is getting flustered. I know he's thinking "why are they asking me to go forward if I'm suddenly going to halt? and she won't let me back up..." so then, what does he do? He rears. He's only a half-rear, but it's still a rear. He never BUCKS, let alone rears. He's never pulled any of that. Then, when I go away for three days, my new trainer, the assist. trainer, and the working student all ride Airborn at one point. He rears for each & every one of them when they ask him for something.
When I come back, Rick breaks the news to me & says I should consider leasing/buying another horse. Apparently, Airborn's not built for jumping. I wanted to prove him wrong. I didn't want to give up on Airborn at any cost. For the past few rides, we've been hacking and concentrating on flatwork, & he's been perfect. Today, I decide to pop over a few cross-rails. As we approach a teensy-tiny one, he ducks out. This repeats a few times before I finally whack him with my left leg & he does it. Then, I try again, on the approach, he stops. And rears. Twice. He's not going all of the way up, but he's still raising.
I don't know what his problem is. Is he hurt? Or has he figured out rearing to be a way to get out of something he doesn't want to do? After this episode, the thought of selling him is sort of tempting. But I can't exactly sell a potentially dangerous horse. The vet's scheduled to see him on Wednesday. I hope they find something just so we know it's discomfort and not a behavior issue.
In the meantime, I'll be taking lessons on school horses. If he's going to rear, for safety's sake, I can't ride him. This sucks.
